“Rejoice, abode of the Holy Spirit” St. Sergius of Radonezh is called the Angel of the Russian Land. His prayer collected, protected, preserved Rus'; his service to the Holy Trinity embodied the ideal of the Russian person - the ideal of life in Christ. The life of St. Sergius was a favorite reading in Russian families, it was read at divine services, and the Russian people still flock to the Lavra of the saint on holidays, in sorrow and in joy. The first biography of St. Sergius was compiled by a disciple of the saint, Epiphanius the Wise (first half of the 15th century). In the 19th century, new biographies appeared. Their authors are Metropolitans of Moscow Platon (Levshin) and Filaret (Drozdov); famous church historians Archbishop Filaret (Gumilevsky) and E.E. Golubinsky. This publication is based on a biography compiled by Hieromonk Nikon (Rozhdestvensky), later Archbishop of Vologda and Totemsky. It was prepared for the 500th anniversary of the death of St. Sergius, in 1892. The main advantages of this life are its completeness, historical accuracy and thoroughness; simple and accessible language; spiritual integrity and clarity. The image of St. Sergius, the prayer book of the Russian Land, again appears before us from the pages of his life, and the heart rejoices with quiet joy, comforted by the wondrous light and wonderful deeds of the ascetic.
