The history of the construction of destroyers for the Russian fleet in France began back in the 80s of the nineteenth century. It was then that the French shipyards received the first Russian order for 4 tiny, by modern standards, destroyers - about 70 tons of displacement each. After the Norman shipyard completed the construction of the “100-ton” destroyers “Sveaborg” and “Revel” in 1886, shipbuilding for the Russian fleet continued in “larger forms”. Following the construction of a number of cruisers of the Russian fleet in the 90s (Admiral Kornilov, Svetlana), armored cruisers of the Bayan type and the squadron battleship Tsesarevich followed. Only at the beginning of the twentieth century, due to the extreme workload of domestic shipyards, Russia for the third time placed an order for five new destroyers in France. This was caused by a sharp change in the maritime policy of the Russian Empire. Government and military officials assessed the seriousness of the threat posed by Japan. At the beginning of 1898, Nicholas II approved a new shipbuilding program “for the needs of the Far East.” Combined with the 1895 program, it was supposed to provide approximately 30% superiority of the Russian fleet over its “potential” enemy. The Russian-Japanese War, which followed soon after the construction and delivery of the “trouts” (the so-called destroyers of this series), and the accompanying “extraordinary circumstances” made it necessary and possible for an urgent and even larger (11 units!) order for the construction of destroyers of this type for Russian fleet. This book is about five Forel-class destroyers and eleven Lieutenant Burakov-class destroyers.
