The story takes place in the World of Shadows, which preserves the morals and customs of the turn of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Only in this place has habitual earthly life acquired ideal features: those who come here know neither hunger, nor cold, nor death, nor wars and aging. The souls of people who were killed unjustly, persecuted and tortured find shelter in it. The Kingdom of Shadows is permanently ruled by King Iloren, Mistress Witch Terhenetar and the Council, the composition of which changes. The only flaw in this artificially created paradise is the off-season - the period during which the World of Shadows begins to crumble into dust, until the Vedas - the shaman's assistants - bring a mortal girl from the human world to marry King Iloren, after which everything takes on its previous ideal form until the next death chosen ones.
