TWO OLD LADIES loved each other so deeply that they became unhappy. Who needs it, they thought so. “Love…” they thought disdainfully. “That’s nonsense!..” Toon Tellegen, who was nicknamed the Dutch Kharms, embodied a new image of “old ladies” in his short stories. They eat shoe polish, drink rum and sherry, live in a dark closet under a roof and die to kiss in a new story. Living many lives, two old women make mistakes: they lie to themselves and others, perform feats in the name of nothing and neglect love. And not It’s worth putting this book down, aware of the fact that it’s absurd to eat shoe polish in teaspoons or write down misdeeds-advice: “Eat quietly, eat less pig,” “Why are you washing your hands with such noise!” First of all, this is a collection of love stories and human fallacies. And each of us loves and is mistaken. “Oh, how I still love you!” And the other answered: “And so on and so forth.”
