Once upon a time there were three bearers of the surname Luria (yes, Luria, not Lurie): the eldest, the middle and the youngest. Of course, you can pronounce it like this: Luria. The more familiar spelling - Lurie - appears in the second generation: as a concession to the crowd; but in the most important cases the correct spelling was used. The eldest (perhaps the most remarkable) today is present only in family tradition. The middle one left behind books, one of which is unlikely to ever become outdated, except perhaps together with the species homo sapiens (a case, we agree, is infrequent); Jewish encyclopedias and TSB know about him. The third left his books and ended up in the new Russian Big Encyclopedic Dictionary. Not a single one is alive. Everyone wants to object (the surest sign that you are dealing with a like-minded person). Junior, among other things, has a book about the middle that is worth reading. (Ya. S. Lurie. The story of one life. European University Publishing House, St. Petersburg, 2004.)
