...After the publication of the novel “Mr. Theodor Mouthpiece,” Fuchs soon gained worldwide fame. Almost every year he published new books - a collection of stories about the fate of Jews during the Second World War “My Black-haired Brothers”, a novel about the ghostly atmosphere of the last pre-war years “Variation on a Dark String” and, above all, an excellent horror novel “The Cremator”, published in 1967 -th year. The main character is Prague crematorium worker Karel Kopfrkingl, who at the very beginning of World War II is attracted by the Nazis to cooperate. Since his wife is of Jewish origin, the neat and at the same time abnormal official Kopfrkingl will decide to kill her and both of his children and burn them in his crematorium. First of all, the form of the novel is interesting, since Fuchs describes the entire action through the eyes of the main character - the crazy Kopfrkingl, whose illness is constantly worsening. In accordance with this, the ghostly atmosphere of the plot, reminiscent of a panopticon, gradually becomes darker. (c) Michal Lastovicka, Radio Prague
