“History, in essence, is little different from the catalog of crimes, follies and disasters of the human race,” states the British historian Edward Gibbon (1737–1794) in the main work of his life - a large-scale work on the decline and destruction of the great Roman Empire. In this innovative yet provocative book for its time, the author traces the processes that took place in the Roman state and society from the rise of the Empire to the fall of Constantinople in 1453, which marked its end. Despite the long and fierce controversy over Gibbon’s “anti-religious” views on the origin and spread of Christianity, his work is still included in the body of classical works for the study of this period in Western universities.
