In Alessandro Baricco's new novel “The Young Bride,” like in his famous “1900,” the atmosphere of the early twentieth century reigns. We find ourselves in a house where daily life is determined by strict rules, and the characters are strictly assigned roles: a Father who enjoys unquestioned authority, an eccentric beautiful Mother, a mysterious Daughter, an Uncle who only briefly awakens from a deep sleep. Every morning a telegram from the Son arrives from England. Its text remains unchanged: “Everything is fine.” But the Young Bride, who arrived from Argentina to marry her Son, involuntarily violates the established rituals, because she does not know what game the Family is involved in and what is at stake. For the first time in Russian.
