There are two common names for the National Museum among Jakarta residents. One of them is the "Elephant House", which the museum received because of the bronze sculpture of the animal standing in front of the building, the second - the "House of Statues" - more accurately reflects the contents of its collection, which contains a variety of art objects, including many sculptures, representing both Buddhism or Hinduism and the animistic beliefs of the indigenous population.
