Capturation during war is an event that puts a soldier in a difficult position, often implying a threat from not only the enemy, but also his state, and at the same time makes him the owner of a unique point of view. Memoirs of Georgy Nikolaevich Satirov (1904– 1981), who fought in the people's militia in Crimea and was captured by the Germans at the very beginning of Hitler's offensive, contain his memories of his stay in labor camps for prisoners of war in Germany in 1942–1945. The author describes in detail the life of the camps, the attitude of prisoners to the work performed, to camp staff and the local population, relationships among prisoners, conflicts on ethnic grounds, the willingness of some to cooperate with the Nazis. The figures of prisoners, fascist guards and representatives of the camp administration are depicted very expressively, and the erudition, observation and talent of the storyteller make these memoirs not only a valuable testimony, but also extremely fascinating reading.
