Hugh Capet became king of France in 987. But it was more a title than power. The vassals of the crown turned out to be too strong and independent. Hugo had to put a lot of effort and money into winning their trust and raising his authority as a monarch. Skillfully taking advantage of disagreements among the feudal lords, the support of the church and being a born diplomat, Hugo Capet increased the royal domain several times, forced many stronger rulers to reckon with him and achieved the transfer of the throne by inheritance to his son Robert, known in history as King Robert II the Pious. The novel “The King of the Franks” is a direct continuation of the book “The Norman Guest”.
