Various influences are identified that played an important role in the formation of this image: legends about Saint Cyprian as the patron of necromancers, the Gnostic interpretation of the mystery of the Crucifixion, the legend about the secret essence of the Archangel Michael and elements of shamanic teaching adopted by the Brazilian Caboclo Indians. Eshu is a powerful ruler of the earthly world, standing at the head of seven legions of spirits, in whose names his name is included as an integral part. All Eshu spirits are paradoxical, ambivalent entities, functionally close to the classical image of the trickster.
