Nicholas di Mattus Frisvold's book “Eshu and the Quimbanda of Night and Fire” is dedicated to the Quimbanda system - a syncretic cult that combines elements of the Afro-Brazilian tradition of Umbanda, African magic, European demonology and Kardecian spiritualism. The book examines in detail the origins and structure of Quimbanda, as well as its methods of magical practice. Frisvold's work will be useful for anyone studying grimoires, the history of Satanism and the practice of traditional witchcraft, as well as for anyone interested in the cults of Quimbanda, Candomblé, Santeria, Palo Mayombe and other religions of the African diaspora. Quimbanda is a living tradition that allows you to achieve specific and visual magical results. In addition, it is a veritable treasury of occult wisdom, incorporating the legacy of such famous magical books as the Goetia, the True Grimoire and the Red Dragon. In his work, Frisvold explores the origins of Eshu - one of the supreme spirits of Quimbanda, the lord of magic and fire, in the image of which the features of the eponymous orisha spirit from the Yoruba religion were combined with European ideas about the devil and with the iconography of Baphomet, developed by Eliphas Levi. Various influences are identified that played an important role in the formation of this image: legends about Saint Cyprian as the patron of necromancers, the Gnostic interpretation of the mystery of the Crucifixion, the legend about the secret essence of the Archangel Michael and elements of shamanic teaching adopted by the Brazilian Caboclo Indians. Eshu is a powerful ruler of the earthly world, standing at the head of seven legions of spirits, in whose names his name is included as an integral part. All Eshu spirits are paradoxical, ambivalent entities, functionally close to the classical image of the trickster. Working with them is considered dangerous for the uninitiated and is classified as black magic; Frisvold describes the Quimbanda spirits as “a mirror in which we eternally contemplate the abyss that opens within us.” But the one who looks into this mirror, armed with all the necessary knowledge and taking due precautions, can know his innermost essence and become familiar with the deepest occult secrets of his own nature and the universe as a whole. The book “Eshu and the Quimbanda of Night and Fire” gives detailed descriptions beneficial and harmful magical operations, all the necessary offerings for each of the spirits are listed, the compositions of magical powders and means for ablution are given, as well as special chants and seals of the spirits. Nicholas di Mattusz Frisvold is initiated into the cult of Quimbanda and has many years of experience within this tradition.
