Vladimir Kurochkin’s “favorites” comprised the novel “My Comrades” (1937), which at one time caused heated reader discussions, as well as novellas and short stories written from 1936 to 1946. My Comrades is a short story novel, historically the earliest form of the novel. The peculiarity of the genre is texturally connected with the freshness of the young worldview and the open-endedness of the heroes’ destinies. Romain Rolland wrote about Kurochkin’s works: “... in them one can feel the joyful scope of sparkling youth. You remember the fiery characters of Dumas the Father and the epic tone of Victor Hugo in his novel “The Ninety-Third Year”...".
