During the assassination attempt on Aral Vorkosigan, his pregnant wife Cordelia was exposed to poison gas. Only thanks to unprecedented medical intervention did the child survive - to grow into a pain-torn, small man with fragile, chalk-like bones... on a planet obsessed with mutagenic superstitions. As the son of a major political figure, Miles is constantly targeted by conspirators and assassins: Barrayaran politics are serious business. For his compatriots, he is a “mutant lord,” a “daddy’s boy,” who gets everything only thanks to the patronage of his influential relatives. And outside the Empire there are other problems: the rest of the civilized galaxy considers the Barrayarans ignorant and bloodthirsty barbarians. How does Miles cope with all this? Well, firstly, he thinks a little faster than those around him, and secondly, he’s damn charming.
