Ursula Le Guin is one of the brightest and most original in the horizon of American “soft” (humanitarian) science fiction. The works from the “Hain” cycle brought her great fame (Hain is a hypothetical super-civilization, the “progenitor” of intelligent life in the Galaxy), forming an organic history of the future rich in original details and findings. Unlike P. Anderson, L. Niven, R. Heinlein and other representatives of the right-wing technocratic wing of American science fiction, Ursula Le Guin builds her Galactic Federation - the League of Worlds, or Ecumen - on the principles of humanism (which is facilitated by the genetic kinship of intelligent races in the Galaxy) and on a special, carefully developed ethics of contact that excludes violent intervention (the League does not rule, but only coordinates the development of all civilizations, representing a kind of “galactic school”) and seriously limiting “progressive” activity, reducing it initially to individual contact of personalities, psychologies, philosophies, cultures. The ecumena, whose history, described in six novels and a dozen stories and short stories, extends over several thousand years, starting from the 23rd-24th centuries, is an attempt, unprecedented in American science fiction, to build a future “universal order” on principles that are more humanitarian than commercial, technological or political. The works of the Hain cycle amaze with the richness of the cultures represented in them (which is not surprising for the author, who grew up in a family of anthropologists and ethnographers); The psychological depth of the characters - earthlings and aliens - is also unprecedented in such literature.
