Ambrose of Milan - Milanese bishop, preacher and hymnographer. One of the four great Latin teachers of the church, he converted and baptized St. Augustine. Ambrose's authority was so great that he influenced the policies of Emperor Theodosius the Great. After his election to the episcopal see, he donated all his enormous wealth and until the end of his life he observed a vow of non-covetousness, leading a modest lifestyle. He is revered as a saint by both Western and Eastern churches. In dogmatic issues, Ambrose's theological works touch on issues relevant to disputes with the Arians - the theology of the Trinity, Christology, the doctrine of the sacraments and repentance. The most important heritage area of St. Ambrose are his sermons. They, as a rule, are filled with ardent faith and denounce sins, primarily pride and depravity.
