In the 1910s–1920s. In Paris, a movement in the visual arts arose, called l’École de Paris (Paris School). A. Modigliani, P. Picasso, J. Pasquin, I. Fujita, F. Léger, who were part of this international circle of artists, gained worldwide fame. Among them were our compatriots. Today, works by Marc Chagall and Chaim Soutine are sold at auctions at record prices. Other artists from Belarus have not been forgotten: Lev Bakst, Yakov Balgley, Evgeny Zak, Mikhail Kikoin, Pinhus Kremen, Israel Levin, Osip Lyubich, Oscar Meshchaninov, Yakov Milkin, Nadezhda Khodasevich-Léger, Sam Tsarfin. Their works are kept in famous museums and exhibited at prestigious exhibitions. And although they were all born on the territory of Belarus, unfortunately, their names are still little known in their homeland. When describing the realities of that era, the author used a chronological principle. Based on research and publications, as well as Parisian impressions, he tells the story of the roads that led future world-famous artists from Belarusian cities and towns to the Parisian “Beehive” - the legendary commune of innovative artists. Their creative experiments, like their lives themselves, were sometimes shocking. But in doing so, they saved art from routine academicism, from vulgarity and sweetness. 2nd edition revised and expanded.
