“Lives of Philosophers and Sophists” is a collection of biographies of the most famous philosophers and sophists of the late 3rd-4th centuries, united by the author’s concept and genre meaning. The historian does not choose the genre of the biographical compendium and the very name of “life”. Biography has always been the most important genre in the ancient world, so Evnapius is quite a traditionalist here too. But his biography is a neoplatonic biography, with a special meaning. The hero of such a biography is always a divinely inspired sage, who, by virtue of his “divinity,” that is, the purity of the soul and its closeness to God, has a beneficial effect on the world. The facts of the life of such a sage are always wonderful, at least in essence, and this is what primarily interests the biographer. It is divinity that gives such facts credibility, truth, and irrefutability. Therefore, one should not be surprised that the “truth” for which Eunapius tests the facts is the highest truth, emanating not from the opinions of people, but from the divine mind. Only the divine, in his opinion, can be true. Therefore, the true facts for Eunapius are the miracles performed by his divine heroes. It is these facts that he examines with all the rigor of the historical method, scrupulously separating true miracles from false ones. Hence the constant epithets - “divine”, “most divine”, used by Eunapius in relation to people, many of whom he knew personally. Perhaps Eunapius is not accurate and consistent in everything, and it is unlikely that his work can claim to be considered an indisputable masterpiece . But the richness and originality of the proposed material make “The Lives of the Philosophers and Sophists” worthy of the closest study.
