Yuliy Margolin was born in Pinsk in 1900, died in Tel Aviv in 1971. In 1936 settled in Tel Aviv with his wife Eva and ten-year-old son Ephraim. In September 1939, during his visit to Lodz, Germany invaded Poland. After an unsuccessful attempt to return to Tel Aviv through Romania, Margolin fled from the Germans to eastern Poland, which was soon occupied by the USSR. In June 1940 The NKVD arrested him in Pinsk and sent him to the Gulag for 5 years on charges of “socially dangerous element.” In March 1946, having miraculously survived 5 years of camps and a year of exile in Altai, he left through Poland for Tel Aviv. Immediately upon arrival, in 10 months he wrote in Russian “Journey to the Land of Ze-Ka.” Until his death, he fought for the salvation of the Jews of the USSR. In Israel they did not want to know anything shameful about the USSR, they practically boycotted Margolin. "The Journey" was first published in France in French in 1949. in a truncated version without the consent of the author. In Russian - in 1952 in New York, also abridged without consent. The full text was first published in French translation in France in 2011, edited by Dr. Lyuba Jurgenson, associate professor at the Sorbonne. The success of the books required additional editions. The same full text was published in German and Polish translations. In 2013, the Jerusalem publishing house Carmel published a complete translation into Hebrew, edited by Misha Shauli. In 2016, a complete Russian edition was published under his editorship.
