This is how many fairy tales begin: the mother died, the man took his stepmother into the house, and she disliked her stepdaughter and sent her to her aunt, Baba Yaga... But Zhu, to whom the same thing happened, is not sure that she ended up in a fairy tale. The village in which she found herself is a godforsaken place somewhere in the North, where the sun never sets, surrounded by forests and swamps, and there is no phone reception here. There is absolutely nothing to do here, and the local old women have an incomprehensible conversation and only talk about damage and the dead who come to the living, about brownies and an incomprehensible grass that helps to find lost people, but it is difficult to pick it: it grows in a distant warm place and she is protected by evil spirits. However, Zhu is not interested in all this. Since her mother passed away, she has found it difficult to communicate with people. This is done for her by her inner twin brother, about whom Zhu begins to think that this is herself. To be a boy or a girl, to live in a city or in a village, to do something or not to do anything at all—for Zhu recently, everything doesn’t matter. However, from the day when the local witch said in her hearts, “Goblin take you away” and Zhu disappeared into the swampy forests with her brother, and came out alone, from that day on she has to learn to live again, listen to the old women and understand what they are talking about the forces living in the surrounding swamps and how to deal with them. This is the only way she can understand something about herself.
