This edition contains: the philosophical work of V. F. Bulgakov “In a dispute with Tolstoy: On the scales of life,” written in 1932–1964, the author’s complete correspondence with L. N. Tolstoy and S. A. Tolstoy and letters Canadian Doukhobors to V.F. Bulgakov. A significant part of this unique material (except for letters from L.N. Tolstoy and S.A. Tolstoy to Bulgakov) is being published for the first time. Of particular interest is Bulgakov’s long-term polemic with Tolstoy, which intensified during his deportation from Russia in 1923 to Prague, as well as upon his return to the Soviet Union in 1948 and his stay in Yasnaya Polyana until his death in 1966. The book will be interesting both literary scholars and a wide range of readers.
