This volume contains articles on theology and patristics by the famous Church historian, patrolologist and Byzantinist Protopresbyter John Meyendorff. The reader is familiar with some of them from books already published in Russia by Fr. John, but in such a volume they are presented to the Russian reader for the first time and provide an impressive opportunity to judge the breadth of his scientific interests: many insights, guesses, intuitions that brought him the well-deserved fame of one of the best Orthodox researchers of the second half of the 20th century and which he later developed into separate monographs, were first “stated” in articles that reflected the accuracy and rigor of the argument and the extensive erudition of the author. Two aspirations, two convictions are invariably present in the works of Fr. John: the uniqueness of Orthodoxy as the only true expression of the Christian faith and the desire to break through to the blinkered European consciousness in the name of dialogue between East and West and bridging the gap between churches, which the author considers a catastrophic spiritual and historical mistake of Christianity. The book is equipped with bibliographic references to the Russian editions of the cited authors and necessary reference apparatus.
