In the fall of 1962, the United States and the Soviet Union came closer than ever to global nuclear war. To forcefully support the flow of Soviet merchant ships delivering Soviet military personnel, weapons and military equipment to Cuba, the USSR Navy sent four diesel submarines to the Caribbean boats. Each boat, in addition to the usual standard weapons, has two torpedoes with nuclear warheads. When the boats get close to Cuba, they are hunted by anti-submarine forces of the US Atlantic Fleet. Peter Huchthausen's book tells the story of the events of the second half of 1962 - the peak of the Caribbean Missile Crisis. The author, who was then a junior officer on one of the American destroyers, was so influenced by these events that later, when he became the US naval attaché in Moscow, he undertook their serious study. P. Huchthausen did a lot of research, personally talked with former Soviet submariners, and also collected memories of American sailors who were eyewitnesses of those events. In addition, more than two dozen pages are devoted to the work of military intelligence officers - American in Moscow, and Soviet in Washington.< /p>
