This book incorporates the professional experience of a psychologist who has devoted years of practice to the problem of domestic violence. Having worked in a crisis center for victims of domestic violence, Tatyana Orlova and her colleagues established a center for psychological assistance, “Never Tolerate: Psychologists for Relationships Without Violence,” where victims can receive free online consultations from specialists. The unique experience of Tatyana and her colleagues made it possible to answer the question about where violence in relationships comes from, why it is so difficult for victims to leave abusers, and for actors of violence to stop behaving cruelly, why society so often blames the victim for violence or does not notice this problem at all. The author examines both social reasons and internal psychological mechanisms of this phenomenon. She describes how stereotypes in Russian society (including harmful patriarchal attitudes passed down from generation to generation) interfere with solving the problem. The book contains self-help tools and practical advice for those who want to change their family situation. Thanks to real cases from practice, readers will be able to better understand the internal processes that accompany violent relationships, understand themselves and break the vicious circle. The book is also suitable for those who want to understand how to help loved ones suffering from domestic violence. The last chapters describe the system of state and public support for victims of violence, which should be formed in Russia.
