The book of the famous Russian folklorist writer Boris Viktorovich Shergin (1893-1973) contains his most famous works, expressing the spiritual riches of the folk word of the Russian North. In Shergin’s work, two main narration styles stand out: pathetic and everyday. The first is used by the writer in descriptions of the majestic nature of the North and the glorious deeds of its people and is associated with the tradition of ancient Russian hagiography and folk epic. The second, characteristic of Shergin’s sketch of morals and everyday fairy tales, is focused on the tale - the reproduction of oral folk speech. Shergin’s use of vernacular gives the language an everyday, unvarnished character; widespread borrowing of “verbal pearls” - dialect features of the Russian North; an abundance of apt comparisons and witty figurative words. The language of Shergin’s works presents professional dictionaries of shipbuilders, sailors, fishermen, and artists of Pomerania. The writer's prose combines high literary tradition and indigenous kinship with folklore.
