“Notes at the Headboard” (Makura no sōshi) belongs to the pen, or rather, the brush of a court lady and famous writer of the late 10th - early 11th centuries. Sei Shonagon (c. 966 - c. 1025). The book is a collection of subtle and often ironic observations, aphoristic passages, diary entries and landscape sketches. Due to the sophistication of its literary form, psychological accuracy and richness of figurative language, “Notes at the Bedside” is considered the pearl of Japanese medieval fiction. Unlike the abridged version widely distributed on the Internet, this file includes all the missing fragments of the classic translation by Vera Markova, which is why its length has increased 4 times.
