The Tate Gallery in London is a collection of paintings and graphics, including the world's richest collection of English art of the 16th–20th centuries, as well as works of Western European (mainly French) art of the late 19th–20th centuries. The basis of the Gallery is made up of paintings that belonged to the industrialist Henry Tate, the founder of the museum, with whose funds the first halls were erected in 1897. Cover: J. E. Millais.
