The name of Janusz Korczak (1878 – 1942) is known to everyone. This man - short, thin, slightly stooped, with a reddish beard - is one of the key figures in the history of the 20th century. A writer, doctor, teacher-reformer, founder of orphanages built on the principle of communes, Korczak was, first of all, a great personality: the significance of his actions today is difficult to overestimate. In addition to the books he wrote - wonderful children's stories, as well as unique works on pedagogy that were ahead of their time, Janusz Korczak's legacy includes a huge baggage of his deeds - those that he did "here and now", often against danger and common sense, for the sake of good children. On August 6, 1942, having rejected the offer to escape from the Warsaw Ghetto, Korczak did not leave his pupils from the Orphanage and was sent with them to Treblinka. This book is the last of the biographies of Korczak written to date. Its author, Joanna Olczak-Roniker (b. 1934), a famous Polish prose writer and screenwriter, is the granddaughter of Jakub Mortkowicz, whose publishing house published all of Korczak’s books. Her look at the life of this man is so close that under it the era that was modernity for Korczak comes to life - things, people, words, thoughts come to life...
