Johann Cabal, scientist, skeptic and necromancer, is on the run again, although this time he is being pursued by government agents. Under a false name, he infiltrates the Princess Hortense, a passenger airship bound for another country. Kabal dreams of a quiet journey without any incidents, but the forced idleness and routine have a bad effect on his plans. When one of the passengers dies on board and the circumstances of his death suggest murder, Cabal decides to investigate.
