The new novel by the largest contemporary writer living in Israel, Ephraim Bauch, is dedicated to Friedrich Nietzsche. The writer has been associated with the theme of Nietzsche since his youth in Chisinau, when he found among the papers of his father who died at the front, tattered editions of the philosopher banned by the Soviet regime. The novel was written from first person, which distinguishes him from the general stream of “Nietzscheanism.” Nietzsche recalls his own life while staying in the Jena insane asylum. A special place is occupied by Nietzsche’s attitude to the Old Testament, taken by Christianity from the Holy Scriptures of the Jews. A strange mixture of love for Christ and rejection of him, whom he calls only “the Jewish rabbi” or “the Crucified One.” And, precisely, this is where his complex relationships with women stem, to whom a significant part of the novel is devoted, but mainly to Nietzsche’s only love for the daughter of the Russian general Gustav von Salome, which he carried throughout his life, until his last day... The novel is published in the year 130th anniversary of the death of the philosopher.
