In his book, J. Watson explores the daily life of a Roman soldier from the moment of conscription until the time of demobilization, and also evaluates the role of active-duty soldiers and veterans in the life of the society to which they belonged. The author describes in detail the structure of the Roman military body and distribution of forces in battles, explains the features of formations and their purpose; pays attention to the procedure for conscription, conditions of service and career, types of monetary payments, rewards and punishments. Watson pays special attention to the cultural life of the Roman soldier with his attitude towards religion, family and society.
