Schopenhauer called the great Giacomo Leopardi (1798–1837) “the poet of world sorrow.” Leopardi's life ended early, and his poetic legacy is small: one collection of poems, Canti (Songs). And besides, in Italian literature he rightfully stands next to Dante and Petrarch. In Russia, the most famous translations are by A. Akhmatova and A. Naiman. The book of translations by T. Stamova includes selected poems by the poet and an essay dedicated to Leopardi’s literary hoaxes. Translation: Tatyana Stamova
