Napoleon's rivals are a topic rarely found in modern Russian literature dedicated to the French emperor. The Great French Revolution gave birth to a whole galaxy of outstanding commanders, such as Augereau, Kleber, Deze, Massena, Bonaparte, Moreau, Gauche, Joubert, Jourdan, Ney, Murat, Pichegru, Lannes, Davout, Bernadotte and many others. These were stars of the first magnitude in the art of military leadership, who left a noticeable mark on the chronicle of the victories of the Republic. The name of General Moreau stands apart from this series of talented warriors. Contemporaries compared Moreau's military genius with that of Bonaparte and believed that it was in this area that Moreau was equal and even superior to Napoleon. Moreau's victory at Hohenlinden temporarily overshadowed one of Napoleon's most brilliant victories - Marengo. Historians put this success of Moreau on a par with Austerlitz and Jena. During the coup d'état of the 18th Brumaire, Moreau supported Napoleon, but was later involved in a conspiracy against the government, arrested, tried and expelled from the country. On this occasion, Napoleon wrote to Fr. St. Helena: “They blamed me for his expulsion; one way or another - there were two of us, but only one was needed." This book is dedicated to the difficult fate of this talented commander, who found his last refuge in St. Petersburg.
