The novel by the famous English writer, medievalist historian Robert Irwin (b. 1946) tells the story of the fantastic adventures of a young spy who came under the guise of a pilgrim to mystical medieval Cairo, where intrigues and adventures, dwarfs and harlots, magicians and robbers await him. All this looks like an ominous dream, an Arabian nightmare of a thousand and one nights.
