The book is the first Russian translation of the "Autobiography" of Franz Grillparzer (1791–1872), an Austrian writer known to Russian readers for the tragedies "Foremother" (1817) and others. "Autobiography" (1853), written at the request of the Vienna Academy and discovered already after the death of F. Grillparzer, in terms of the content and brightness of the episodes it is equivalent to a work of art. At the same time, this is a serious aesthetic document that introduces the reader to the diversity of literary movements and talents of the first third of the 19th century. The historical picture revealed in it of the period of Napoleon's invasion and anti-Napoleonic resistance, historical figures (Goethe and Prince Metternich) completely recreate the socio-political and spiritual atmosphere of one of the most serious stages in the life of Europe.
