Norway, our days. The writer’s family gathers at the bronze “stumbling block” in front of the house of their ancestor, Hirsch Komissar. Following a denunciation, he ended up in a concentration camp and died there. In the same city, not far from the stone, in a quiet prestigious area there is a beautiful villa. During the war, this was the headquarters of that same Henry Rinnan, a secret Gestapo agent guilty of many atrocities. But for the descendants of the Commissioner, this house is also not a foreign place. Is this really possible? “The Lexicon of Light and Darkness” is an attempt to reconstruct the history of a family during the war years on the basis of authentic evidence and archival documents. The novel has been translated into more than 20 languages and has been awarded the main national prize in Norway. From the author Dear Hirsch, this book is an attempt to delay the second death, to push back oblivion. Yes, I don’t know for sure what you had to go through, how exactly everything was, but I collected your story bit by bit and put them together so that we can vividly imagine that bygone time. I am not a Jew, but my children, your great-great-grandchildren, have Jewish blood. Your story is their story, too. How can I, a father, explain to them that hatred of Jews? After our conversation at the stumbling block, I looked into archives, books and family albums, I traveled to different towns and villages where I had never been before, I talked to many people. But most importantly, I unearthed the history of a villa on the outskirts of Trondheim. The story is absolutely monstrous and implausible, I would not have believed in my life that such a thing could happen, but this villa in a bizarre way united our family and Henry Oliver Rinnan, a young man who became the fiercest of the fiercest Nazis in Norway. Villa with the letter B. Gang abode. published in Russian for the first time.
