Danilo Galitsky (1201–1264), ruler of the Galicia-Volyn lands, remained in the memory of descendants as a collector of ancient Russian lands, a great reformer and a far-sighted politician, who became the first legitimate king in the history of the Ukrainian people, that is, recognized in Europe. In addition, he was the first among the Russian princes to try to end the dependence of his lands on the Mongol-Tatar conquerors.
