Cora Carlisle, abandoned as a baby, adopted as a child, deceived as a youth, goes to New York to find her roots while looking after a young girl. Cora's ward is none other than Louise Brooks, future silent film star and 1920s idol. Louise, having escaped from a hateful provincial town, entered a progressive dance school, and her brilliant, albeit short, rise is still ahead. However, this precocious, well-read and insightful person has plenty of self-confidence. Cora Carlisle faces a difficult life. The heady changes that the seductive “Jazz Age” brought with it are seen by the decent matron from Kansas as a complete loss of moral guidelines and extravagance. However, in New York, her worldview is bursting at the seams. What is the price of feigned decency, what is the value of genuine kindness, what is better to choose - uninhibited sincerity or a convenient mask? Comparing herself to young Louise, Cora gradually learns important things - and returns home a changed person - capable of unconditional love, being kind, being tolerant and standing up for those less fortunate. "The Companion" is a fascinating story set against the backdrop of one of the most colorful periods of the 20th century. The young rebel and the respectable matron are two sides of the same coin, two women who managed to help each other and those who needed help. In the intertwining of two lives, a story emerges about how a person changes and changes others, how he learns, how he makes choices and what kindness he is capable of.
