The theme of this book is the people of imperial Rome, what they looked like and what they were like: a Roman sculptural portrait is given in conjunction with the narrative material contained in the works of ancient writers and in inscriptions; thus, the art of sculpture and the art of words mutually complement each other. The Roman sculptural portrait is an extremely valuable psychological document of world history, since it combines the virtuoso technique of the sculptor with merciless realism. The Roman portrait, like ancient literature, convinces us that the ancient world was a world of very energetic people with an extremely rich variety of characters and intellect, was a world of people whose psychology largely overlaps with the psychology of modern man: the ancient Romans had different socio-economic conditions, different historical experiences, but in principle they were the same people as us.
