Thorvard, king of the Fjalls, and Skelvir Hövding from Slattenland stopped for the night on the Kvitting peninsula. Under the influence of evil spells, originating in the long-standing war between the Kvitt and Fjall tribes, Thorvard saw in the place of Skelvir his old enemy, the unrecognized king of the Kvitts, Bergvid Black Skin, and attacked him. In the battle, Skelvir was mortally wounded. Skelvir's daughter, Ingitora, who has a strong poetic gift, began to avenge her father's death by writing disgraceful poems about Torvard (which, according to the Scandinavians, bring bad luck and can even destroy). Egvald, the son of the Slatt king, fell in love with Ingitora and promised her to kill Torvard, if she later marries him. But in the battle Egvald was defeated and captured. Torvard promised to release him for a ransom, provided that the ransom was brought to him by Egvald's sister, Valborg. But instead of Valborg, Ingitora went with the ransom. On the way to Fjallenland, the ship on which she sailed was captured by Bergwid Black Skin. Ingitora eluded him - and found herself alone in a deep forest, in a foreign, hostile country, very far from her homeland...
