The story of the French romantic Charles Nodier (1780–1844) “The Fairy of Bread Crumbs” (1832) is one of the most original and perfect works of this versatile writer - novelist, storyteller, bibliophile. The story is based on the story of the simple-minded and noble carpenter Michel, who comes out of all trials with honor and remains faithful to the ugly but wise dwarf nicknamed the Fairy of Bread Crumbs, who turned out to be none other than the legendary Queen of Sheba - the beautiful Bilquis. Biblical legends, Masonic legends, folklore and literary tales, fantasy in the spirit of Hoffmann, satire on illiterate officials and a parody of the scientific research of pseudoscientists - all this is present in the story and creates its unique charm.
