In 1212, the first military clash of Russians took place with the new enemy of Rus' - the crusaders. The united fifteen thousand Novgorod-Polotsk army, led by the then Novgorod prince Mstislav the Udal, made the first campaign against the strongholds of the Order of the Crusaders in Livonia. The Germans concluded a separate peace with the Principality of Polotsk, and the Novgorodians, left alone, were forced to agree to a truce with the order.
