Samuel Taylor Coleridge, 1772–1834 Born into a vicar's family. He studied in London and Oxford, preparing to become a priest. Because of unhappy love and under the influence of the ideas of the French Revolution, he quits his studies and entered the dragoon regiment under an assumed name. There he meets Southey, they are friends until 1797. Together they plan to found a commune, write a drama in verse, give lectures, marry their sisters. Coleridge publishes a series of sonnets and edits a magazine. In 1796 he met Wordsworth. In 1796, their joint collection was published. In 1798–1799 they visit Germany together. Coleridge listens to lectures at the University of Göttingen. Together with Wordsworth, he publishes the aesthetic program of the “Lake School” in the preface to the second edition of their joint collection. Disillusioned with the French Revolution, he studies Kant, Schiller, and Schelling. Translates Schiller's play in verse "Wallenstein" Writes articles for the "Morning Post" and poems. Works on o. Malta Secretary to the Governor. Visits Italy and Sicily. Writes a series of lectures on poetry and drama. In 1811 he quarrels with Wordsworth and moves to London. In 1811–1814 he was on the verge of suicide. From 1814 he gradually recovered, became interested in Christianity, and translated Kant. He publishes books of poetry, treatises on philosophy and literature, and gives lectures. Dies of a heart attack.
