This work continues the book published two years ago, in which the multifaceted problem of Leningrad’s struggle for survival was examined from June 1941 to May 1942. In the second book, based on the study of archival and published documents, on the achievements of domestic and foreign researchers, the author seeks to answer the following questions: why repeated attempts to relieve the city, besieged since September 8, 1941, were successful only in January 1943; what was the real contribution of Leningraders to the defense of their city; what were the relationships between the authorities and the population during the period under review; what are the real losses of civilians from hunger and soldiers of the Red Army in defensive and offensive operations to relieve the siege of Leningrad. The book shows everyday life during the siege through the eyes of the Leningraders themselves, and examines the main factors of survival during the siege. Continuing the principle of a synchronized presentation of events in the blockade ring and beyond, adopted in the first book, the author month after month traces the struggle of the front city for its survival. The documents placed at the end of each chapter, extracts from memoirs and diaries published in recent years, have an independent semantic meaning and show that the author’s assessment of certain events is based on a solid documentary foundation.
