The content of the poem “Khosrow and Shirin” (1181) is all-consuming love: “Everything is a lie, love alone is an unquestioning decree, and everything in the world is a game that is outside the game of love... Whoever becomes without love, let him heed the reproach: he is dead, even if he were a hundred times full of life.” In essence, this is a Sufi work that allegorically depicts the soul’s desire for God; but the feelings are depicted so vividly that an unprepared reader does not even notice the allegory, perceiving the poem as a romantic love story. The plot is taken from an ancient legend that describes many adventures.
