...It was all so similar to the films about the future that I watched as a child, to the books that I read. And for the first time I thought: how can this be? This is the future that science fiction writers dreamed about, which futurologists spurred on. Here it is, it has come. But why is it so different from what they described? They dreamed that flying trams would scurry over cities, that new computers would allow people to understand each other without words, exchanging thoughts, making them closer. The cities will be beautiful, the people will be free. Robots will take on the menial, hard work. And so I walked through endless corridors, stuffed with video cameras, and realized that something had happened, and instead of our future, someone else’s had come. That the future has been changed for us. Is this the kind of future our grandparents, fathers and mothers dreamed of? What happened to our world? And is it possible to win everything back?...
