“Even in his sleep, Joseph recognized the voice of his rooster. Hoarse, with anguish, it cannot be confused with any rooster crow in the area. Joseph opened his eyes and lay motionless for some time, looking upward, watching the light of the stars gradually fade in the morning sky. In recent days, there was sweltering heat in Nazareth and the old carpenter (Joseph had been trampling the sinful Earth for seventy years) moved to sleep on the flat roof of his house. His two youngest sons from his first marriage settled down on the roof with him. There were two daughters left in the house, also from his first marriage, and a young (seventeen years old) wife, with whom Joseph had been living for almost a year. Joseph had two more older sons, but they had long ago acquired their own families and separated from their father. Joseph was distracted from contemplating the stars by the voice of the youngest son. The boy muttered something in his sleep. Joseph turned to his son and listened. The boy, as if sensing his father’s attention, immediately calmed down.”
