What are “Adventures of Words” about? Yes, about everything at once: about history and religion, about where words come into the world and why sometimes they live from ancient times to the present day, and sometimes they die quickly, like moths. About why and why people started talking when the word first came into the world. About where... this or that word came into our language... For example, the word “Boston” or the word “caterpillar”, or "hood"? About the difference between the words “king” and “dwarf”, which seem to be similar to each other. About what the not so similar words “kral” and “rabbit” have in common. About where the words “hood” and “kaput” came to us and what the head has to do with it... And about which words there are more in the Russian language - French, German or Arabic. And about what alcohol has in common with Haroun al-Rashid from 1000 and One Nights. And also about how foreign words change, becoming Russian, and how many Russian words have entered other languages, and why other words that we consider foreign are actually the most Russian of Russian... My God, how is this everything is interesting and how difficult it is to find out from academic dictionaries the answer to the most seemingly simple question about the origin of the most common and, at first glance, most “our” word, such as, for example, “board” or “izba”! you can tell everyone, because the author, on the pages of two small books, managed to tell in the most entertaining way detective, everyday, historical, geographical, even chemical and biological, even mathematical stories of about three hundred words of the Russian language - those that were formed from the personal names of scientists, and those , which remained irrefutable evidence of the Tatar-Mongol yoke; those who came to our land along with Napoleon’s army, and those who, once born among us, traveled to Europe, and then returned to their native land in an almost unrecognizable form, just as happens with furs, wood or minerals. “In the World of Words” and especially “Adventures of Words” are scientific books in the most precise sense, which means interesting, fascinating and, of course, adventurous, because the life of each word is a whole adventurous epic and at the same time a historical and archival mystery. That’s how they are written, these books, easily and cheerfully, in short, succinct chapters, despite the small volume containing a lot of varied, interesting and useful information. Their heroes are words, their space is speech, which contains the entire universe and the existence of the people, which in turn absorbs almost all the cultures existing in the universe. Of course, three hundred words is just a small drop in the ocean of speech, but even in a small drop, in essence, the great sea of being is reflected in all its glory.
