"The History of the Ten-Year Swedish-Muscovite War" by the royal historiographer of Sweden Johan Widekind (1618-1678) is published in Russian for the first time. An annotated translation of this work was prepared at the end of the 30s of the current century by employees of the Leningrad branch of the Institute of History of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

The publication of the book was interrupted by the war. In besieged Leningrad, A.I. died of hunger. Vasiliev. S.A. died in the evacuation train carriage. Anninsky. The manuscript of the translation of Widekind's "History" and comments to it has been preserved in the Archives of the St. Petersburg branch of the Institute of Russian History of the Russian Academy of Sciences (D.276. Op.1. No. 140).

Almost fifty years later in 1985-1987 . The main work on preparing the manuscript for printing was undertaken by G.M. Kovalenko and G.A. Pobedimova. They were corrected typos, translations of some fragments of “History” were clarified (A.N. Vasilyev took part in editing the translations of 1-8 books, Y.N. Bespyatykh took part in 9-10 books), checked and brought into line with generally accepted spellings of proper names and geographical names . G.M. Kovalenko wrote an article about the author of “The History of the Ten Years’ War”, shortened the comments of A.I. Vasiliev and V.G. Gaiman and supplemented them with indications of the latest literature. N.Yu. took over the technical work. Semenov, who together with G.A. Pobedimova identified the authorship of the comments. Subsequently, organizational, scientific and technical work was carried out by A.L. Khoroshkevich.

The Russian title of the book does not fully correspond to the original Swedish - “The History of the Ten-Year War of the Swedes in Russia.” This edition retains the title Latin version. Political-geographical terminology, which presents significant difficulties, especially for the Russian-Finnish, Russian-Baltic, Russian-Scandinavian borderlands, is conveyed in Swedish or Polonized form by the author of the published monument. The same applies to ethnonyms and similar terms (for example, the diversity in the name of Muscovites is preserved: “Muscovites”, “Muscovites”, “Muscovites”). The difficult fate of the monument in 1939-1940, 1985-1989. left its mark on the quality of the accompanying article and comments in this edition, which do not take into account all the literature on the topic. Part of the Swedish literature was obtained with the kind assistance of M. Attius Solman (Stockholm), U. Birgegaard (Uppsala), I. Nordlander (Stockholm), H. Sundberg (Stockholm), and the late A. Attmann (Gothenburg).

Like the translators, many assistants to this “Moscow” publication did not live to see the publication of Widekind’s work. This is I.P. Shaskolsky and L.V. Zaborovsky.

The publishers are grateful to everyone who contributed to the completion of the book, including the Swedish Consul General in Leningrad in 1985-1986. B. Okkeren, the cultural attache of the Swedish Embassy in Russia, Mr. J. Oberg, and the staff of the embassy and consulate.

Thanks to their help, the monument to the historical thought of Sweden in the 17th century. and Russia of the XX century. could finally see the light. We hope that in the historiography of the Troubles in Russia at the beginning of the 17th century. there will be one less blank spot, and the “cooperation” of Russian historians with Swedish ones will contribute to the disappearance of topics like the one that served as the object the works of Y. Widekind, and the one that took the life of the translator and commentator of his work. SUMMARY: History of the ten-year Swedish-Muscovite war (7). From the compilers (507). The work of Y. Widekind as a source on the history of the Time of Troubles (509). Apology of Johan Widekind (521). Commentary (562). Bibliography (633). List of abbreviations (639). Index of names (641). Index of geographical names (649).
