We present to the attention of the domestic reader the first Russian edition of the novel “War” by Louis-Ferdinand Céline, the manuscript of which was sensationally discovered in the summer of 2021, along with three other Céline manuscripts, which until that moment were considered hopelessly lost. “War” certainly occupies a central place among these finds. This novel, which Céline worked on immediately after the publication of Journey to the End of the Night (1932), fills the most important gap for understanding his work: being at the front during the First World War, being seriously wounded and undergoing a long recovery in a military hospital. “War” is the only work by Selin where these events were fully and completely reflected. A cruel time of loss of illusions, all shades of human baseness and hypocrisy, the death of comrades in arms, finding new friends in the person of neighbors in the ward, the struggle for survival, pain, horror , hopelessness, loneliness, hatred, sex, love, a series of tragic events that constantly turn into farce, evil fate and miraculous salvation through the eyes of the main genius of world literature of the 20th century. It is difficult to imagine a book more relevant for our times.
